Chapter Thirteen
The new me
Martha
* * *
I felt hopeless, pacing around my boudoir. I felt like the anxiety was wrapping itâs claws tightly around my neck. It had been several days since I last saw Sylius. It was clear that he was avoiding me.
I was supposed to be starting over in fucking Farrington but instead I was here waiting around and wasting my time.
When Sylius saw me in his court he didnât react like I had expected. He just sat on his throne, staring at me with mixture of contempt and admiration.
Well, I wasnât expecting him to do anything to me in front of his Fae. He had power over me, but he knew that my energy was explosive and that I could hurt him. No one else in this court knew that he hadnât been able to defeat me in the Great Forest.
Two amulets were dangling from my hand. I had decided to entice him with the other amulet that Darragh had gifted to me. Everyone kept talking about how the three of them were significant and Sylius wouldnât know which one of them was the one that he was after. He noticed them instantly and his eyes started glowing with such a potent energy. My breath was becoming shallow; I was reacting to his magic. The voice inside my head told me that I had to be myself. I couldnât let him sense that he scared me in any way.
The Martha that everyone knew was bubbly and seductive. The dark prince didn't scare me anymore. After my stay with the witches I felt more confident and certain that I knew how to defend myself.
Sylius gazed intently at the amulets for several seconds and then he snatched them out of my hand. Darragh had been right all along. The Dark Prince seemed delighted with my gift. This plan had to work.
My heart was still racing a little, pumping blood way too fast. I wasnât sure if it was fear or adrenaline that was making me dizzy when he stared at me. His energy as always, was intense.
âWhere did you get these from?â he asked. He approached me again and leaned so close that I could see my own reflection in his eyes.
âI told you already. I stole the amulets from Darragh. He found out that I took them and now he hates my guts. Darragh was ready to throw me into prison but I escapedâ I explained, playing with a lock of my hair.
Sylius stared at me for several long moments, like he was trying to read me. At some point later on, I would have to try to seduce him, but his energy was very absorbing. It was going to take me a long time to gain his trust.
âI just need one more. And if I get it, then it will be the end of the Fae Kingâ he whispered, staring back at the amulets. He obviously had no idea that one wasnât legitimate. It was a gift from Darragh and now I sorely regretted giving it away.
